Given such a cohort, and a nonnegative integer <math>i</math>, the parity progression ratio from birth order <math>i</math> to birth order <math>i + 1</math> is defined as the ratio of the [[completed cohort fertility]] for that cohort for birth order <math>i+1</math>, to the [[completed cohort fertility]] for that cohort for birth order <math>i</math>.

Alternatively, the PPR describes the probability that a person in that cohort who has had <math>i</math> children will proceed to have an <math>(i+1)^{th}</math> child.
