Definition

A birth cohort is a cohort of people who were born within a specified timeframe. Equivalently, it can be defined as a cohort of people whose age at a given time of measurement in within a specified age range.

Birth cohorts may be filtered further by sex, race, or other demographic criteria. For instance, when studying completed fertility rates, we consider birth cohorts of females.
