Definition

Surviving kids per woman is an estimate of the number of expected number of children of a female who survive to adulthood. It is not a standard demographic variable, so its operationalization is not standardized.

Gapminder operationalization

Gapminder computes the surviving kids per woman in a given country in a given year by using the total fertility rate of that year and multiplying it with the probability of surviving to a threshold age for adulthood (in this case, 35) using a model lifetable.
