Definition

The term opportunity cost of children refers to the indirect costs that parents experience as a result of having children that fall under the header of opportunity costs. Examples include:

  • Opportunity costs of earning because parents need to leave their jobs or reduce their hours of work to take care of their children.
  • Opportunity costs of time in terms of leisure activities forgone because of the time spent with children, or the inflexibility thereof.
