Naive dichotomous model of intended versus unintended pregnancies

This is a naive model with the following features:

  • Every pregnancy is either an intended pregnancy or an unintended pregnancy.
  • With perfect availability of contraception and abortion, the number of births arising from unintended pregnancies would be zero. With imperfect availability, there would be a nonzero number of births arising from unintended pregnancies. The availability of contraception or abortion would not affect the number of births through intended pregnancies.
  • The number of births through intended pregnancies for a woman is equal to her desired fertility. In particular, this means that with perfect availability of contraception and abortion, desired fertility = expected fertility = (actual) completed fertility.
