Definition

The sex ratio of a population is the ratio of males to females in the population. The sex ratio has many different operationalizations. The following operationalizations are common:

  • The numeric ratio (number of males)/(number of females)
  • The numeric ratio (number of females)/(number of males)
  • The number of males per 100 females (used by the Population Reference Bureau)
  • The number of males per 1000 females
  • The number of females per 100 males
  • The number of females per 1000 males
